Ellen DeGeneres Breaks Silence on Minneapolis Shooting

Comedian Ellen DeGeneres is now living a quieter life in the English countryside, largely out of the public spotlight. But recent events in the United States have prompted her to speak out.

On Instagram, DeGeneres, 67, addressed the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old woman who was killed in Minneapolis earlier this month. According to reports, Good was shot on January 7 after dropping off her six-year-old child at school during an encounter involving federal immigration agents. The incident remains under investigation.

In a video message shared with her followers, DeGeneres expressed sympathy for the Minneapolis community, referencing her connection to the city through her 2024 Netflix stand-up special, Ellen DeGeneres: For Your Approval, which was filmed there.

“Hey everybody, I just wanted to say I am so sorry for what is happening in Minneapolis—and in our country,” DeGeneres said. “But specifically Minneapolis right now, because that’s where I shot my last stand-up special, and everybody there couldn’t have been more lovely.”

She added that Minneapolis had lived up to its reputation during her visit. “They say it’s the happiest city in America, and I found that to be true,” she said.

DeGeneres went on to voice support for peaceful demonstrations following the shooting.

“My thoughts and my prayers are going out to everyone,” she said. “I’m proud of everyone who’s protesting peacefully, and I’m so sorry for anyone who has been hurt just for protesting—just for doing what you should be doing.”

She concluded the video with a brief message: “I’m just sending love.”

In a separate post, DeGeneres shared a photo of Renee Good alongside a caption originally written by author and former presidential candidate Marianne Williamson. DeGeneres added her own response, writing, “I’m so sad, and so angry, and so worried.”

The post also referenced a letter written by Good’s wife, Becca Good, which was published by Minnesota Public Radio on January 9. In the letter, Becca described her wife as deeply compassionate and joyful.

“If you ever encountered my wife, Renee Nicole Macklin Good, you know that above all else, she was kind,” Becca wrote. “Kindness radiated out of her. Renee sparkled. She was made of sunshine.”

Video footage released by Alpha News appears to show moments leading up to the shooting from one perspective. In the video, Renee Good is seen in her vehicle while Becca records the encounter. Audio captures shouting shortly before gunshots are heard. Other bystander footage shows an agent firing multiple shots into the vehicle, which then crashed. Authorities have not yet released final findings regarding the use of force or the statements heard on the video.

Despite public outcry, federal immigration operations in Minnesota have continued. On January 19, DeGeneres shared another video expressing solidarity with protesters, captioning it simply: “Hold on.”
