Amish Hamburger Steak Bake – Hearty Comfort Food

This Amish Hamburger Steak Bake is a classic comfort dish featuring seasoned ground beef patties, browned to perfection and smothered in creamy mushroom gravy. It’s easy to prepare and perfect for family dinners.

Ingredients

For the Hamburger Steaks:

  • Ground beef – 2 pounds
  • Saltine crackers, finely crumbled – 1 ½ cups
  • Milk – 1 cup
  • Italian herbs – 1 teaspoon
  • Onion powder – 1 teaspoon
  • Garlic powder – 1 teaspoon
  • Cayenne pepper – Dash (optional)
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper – To taste
  • All-purpose flour – ½ cup (for coating)

For the Gravy:

  • Condensed cream of mushroom soup – 1 can (10.5 ounces)
  • Milk – 1 cup

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat and Prepare Pan
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish and set aside.

Step 2: Make the Beef Mixture
In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, crumbled saltine crackers, 1 cup milk, Italian herbs, onion powder, garlic powder, cayenne pepper (if using), salt, and pepper. Mix gently until all ingredients are evenly incorporated.

Step 3: Form and Coat Patties
Shape the beef mixture into 8 evenly sized patties, about ½-inch thick. Lightly dredge each patty in flour, shaking off any excess.

Step 4: Brown the Patties
Heat a skillet over medium-high heat with a small amount of oil if needed. Brown each patty for 2–3 minutes per side until a golden crust forms. Transfer browned patties to the prepared baking dish.

Step 5: Prepare the Mushroom Gravy
In a bowl, whisk together the condensed cream of mushroom soup and 1 cup milk until smooth. Pour the gravy evenly over the browned hamburger steaks.

Step 6: Bake the Dish
Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes, or until the gravy is bubbling and the patties are fully cooked through.

Step 7: Rest and Serve
Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes before serving. Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or buttered noodles for a comforting meal.

Chef’s Tips

  • Extra Flavor: Sauté 1 small diced onion in the skillet before browning the patties for a richer flavor.
  • Crispier Crust: For a slightly crispier texture, broil uncovered for 2–3 minutes at the end of baking.
  • Vegetable Pairing: Serve alongside roasted vegetables or a fresh garden salad to balance the richness of the dish.

This Amish Hamburger Steak Bake is a family-friendly recipe that combines simplicity with hearty, home-style flavors.
