More Than $1.3 Million Raised for Hero Who Stopped Gunman at Bondi Beach

A horrific terror attack at Bondi Beach in Sydney on Sunday, December 14, has left the world shaken. At least 15 people were killed and dozens more injured when two gunmen opened fire on families gathered for Hanukkah celebrations.
Among the victims were a 10-year-old girl, a Holocaust survivor, a British rabbi, a retired New South Wales police officer, and a French national. The suspected attackers, described as a father-and-son duo, have been identified as 50-year-old Sajid Akram and 24-year-old Naveed Akram. Sajid was declared dead at the scene, while Naveed remains in critical condition.
Australian authorities have confirmed that the attackers acted alone, motivated by extremism, and were not part of a larger cell, though both were previously interviewed by security services in 2019.
Ahmed al Ahmed: A Courageous Civilian
Amid the chaos, Ahmed al Ahmed emerged as a hero. The 43-year-old, originally from Syria, was in the area for coffee when the attack began. Initially taking cover behind parked cars, Ahmed sprang into action, leaping onto one of the gunmen’s backs in a tense struggle over the firearm.
Captured on video, his fearless intervention disarmed the suspect, likely saving countless lives. Ahmed sustained gunshot wounds to his arm and hand during the confrontation and is now recovering in hospital. His actions have drawn global attention, including praise from President Donald Trump, who called Ahmed “a very brave person… who saved a lot of lives.”
Ahmed’s heroism has inspired overwhelming support. A GoFundMe campaign to assist him has already raised over $1.3 million, with contributions including $99,000 from billionaire investor Bill Ackman. The campaign highlights Ahmed’s courage:
“In a moment of chaos and danger, he stepped forward without hesitation. His actions were selfless, instinctive, and undeniably heroic, taken without regard for his own safety. Early reports indicate he was shot twice in the process while protecting others.”
Ahmed’s family has praised his bravery. His cousin Mustafa told 7News Australia:
“He is a hero, 100 percent he is a hero. He has two shots, one in his arm and one in his hand.”
Ahmed’s father added:
“When he did what he did, he wasn’t thinking about the background of the people he’s saving. He doesn’t discriminate between one nationality and another. Especially here in Australia, there’s no difference between one citizen and another.”
New South Wales Premier Chris Minns visited Ahmed in the hospital, calling him a “real-life hero” whose courage “no doubt saved countless lives.”
Ahmed al Ahmed’s fearless actions in the face of extreme danger stand as a powerful example of selflessness and courage, showing the profound impact one person can have in protecting the lives of many.
