Rob Reiner’s family: his 3 children including troubled son

Tragedy struck Hollywood as acclaimed director and actor Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were found dead in their Los Angeles home. Reiner, the beloved filmmaker behind classics like When Harry Met Sally…, The Princess Bride, Stand by Me, A Few Good Men, and Misery, was 78 years old. Michele, his partner of decades, was 68.
Emergency responders from the Los Angeles Fire Department arrived at the home on Sunday, December 14, 2025, at 3:30 p.m. local time. Upon entering, they found both Reiner and his wife deceased. Authorities have not made any arrests, and the investigation is ongoing.
A Life in Hollywood
Born Robert Maxwell Reiner on March 6, 1947, in New York City, Rob was the son of comedy legend Carl Reiner, creator of The Dick Van Dyke Show. Rob first gained fame as an actor on All in the Family, before moving behind the camera to direct films that became cultural touchstones. His work earned multiple Academy Award nominations and left an indelible mark on generations of moviegoers.
Rob met Michele Singer while directing When Harry Met Sally…. Their meeting famously inspired a change to the movie’s ending, a decision Reiner fondly recalled:
“I met my wife while making the movie, and we changed the ending. This is what we came up with. Billy [Crystal] came up with some of the dialogue, and that’s how we decided they do end up together.”
The couple married in 1989 and had three children: Jake, Nick, and Romy Reiner.
The Reiner Family
Jake Reiner, the eldest, has worked behind the scenes in Hollywood as a producer and production executive, including on several of his father’s projects. He is known for keeping his personal life private.
Nick Reiner, the middle child, has been open about his struggles with drug addiction and homelessness in his teenage years. In 2016, he shared in an interview how addiction took him far from home, cycling in and out of rehab, and experiencing life on the streets across multiple states. His experiences later inspired his semi-autobiographical film, Being Charlie, which he co-wrote and directed with his father.
“Now, I’ve been home for a really long time, and I’ve sort of gotten acclimated back to being in L.A. and being around my family,” Nick said in reflection on his journey.
The youngest, Romy Reiner, has largely remained out of the public eye, occasionally attending events with her parents but not pursuing a career in Hollywood.
From Rob’s first marriage to actress Penny Marshall, he also had a daughter, Tracy Reiner, adopted during his marriage to Marshall. Rob and Penny divorced in 1981.
Remembering Rob and Michele
Rob Reiner’s contributions to cinema—as an actor, director, and storyteller—remain timeless, while Michele’s partnership and family dedication were central to his life. Their passing is a profound loss, and our thoughts are with the Reiner family during this incredibly difficult time.
