YouTuber and animal activist dies by suicide aged 29 as husband releases heartbreaking video

Mikayla Raines, a beloved YouTuber and founder of Save A Fox Rescue, has tragically died by suicide at the age of 29, her husband announced in an emotional video.

Known for her deep passion for rescuing and rehabilitating foxes, Raines founded her Minnesota-based fox sanctuary in 2017 and cultivated a dedicated online following over the years. Her work saved hundreds of animals and inspired many to support ethical wildlife care.

In a heartfelt video posted to her YouTube channel, Raines’ husband, Ethan, revealed that she had taken her own life following years of online harassment and damaging rumors.

“Being the sensitive human that she was, Mikayla took it all to heart,” Ethan said, describing the emotional toll that persistent social media attacks had taken on her mental health. He noted that some of the hurtful claims came from individuals within the animal rescue community—people she had once considered close friends.

Raines had previously spoken openly about her mental health, including her diagnosis of autism, depression, and borderline personality disorder—conditions which, Ethan explained, contributed to emotional sensitivity and impulsive behaviors.

“When people began to barrage her with criticism, she felt as if the entire world had turned against her,” he shared. “And a couple of days ago, she ended her life.”

Ethan paid tribute to his wife’s lifelong dedication to animals, sharing how her unique ability to hyperfocus—linked to her autism—fueled her passion. “From a young age, she devoted every waking hour to helping animals, whether it was guiding a snapping turtle across the road or rescuing 500 foxes from a fur farm,” he said.

He also spoke candidly about the devastating impact of online cruelty. “It breaks my heart that someone who was so selfless and devoted her life to animals could have so much negativity directed at her,” he said.

In one especially emotional moment, Ethan expressed his pain not just for himself, but for their young daughter: “I wish those who spread the hate could have seen little Freya’s heart break when she realized she would never see her mommy again.”

Despite the grief, Ethan shared that he intends to carry on Mikayla’s mission. “I will not allow her light to be extinguished,” he said.

He concluded his message with a moving farewell:

“I love you, Mikayla. I will always love you so much, and I miss you.”
